Special Mask to detect Pediatric Tuberculosis - SMaRT-PCR

  • Dr Ambreen Sheik, from Mumbai devised the non invasive mask-based testing for Tuberculosis. 

  • It is known as SMaRT-PCR or Sampling with Mask and RT-PCR.

  • The study conducted in three hospitals of Mumbai with 30 and 20 children as test and control respectively by using modified N-95 which has a gelatin cover on the inside to capture respiratory aerosols. 

  • After wearing a mask, the child were asked to talk, recite poem amd cough in between for 10 minutes and samples then put through RT-PCR. 

  • The study gives a boost in diagnosing Pediatric TB with sensitivity of 75% and specificity of 95% in untreated patients similar to Gene Xpert.

Use of Azithromycin prevents maternal sepsis in vaginal delivery - N Engl J Med.

  • In a  study conducted by Dr. Tita et al from University of Alabama, a multi country, placebo controlled, randomised trial on 29,278 women were recruited.

  • This study included women who were in labor at 28 weeks of gestation or more and who were planning a vaginal delivery to receive a single 2g oral dose of azithromycin or placebo to prevent maternal sepsis.

  • The study concludes that Use of Azithromycin significantly lower risk of maternal sepsis or death than placebo.

  • India's national telemedicine platform, eSanjeevani, has registered a landmark by providing teleconsultation services to 100.11 million patients,  since its launch in November 2019. 

  • The cloud-based platform is the world's largest telemedicine implementation in primary healthcare and comes in two modes. 

  1. eSanjeevani AB-HWC connects patients through health workers to doctors in hubs.

  2. eSanjeevaniOPD empowers citizens to access outpatient services remotely via smartphones or laptops. 

  • eSanjeevani has democratized healthcare in India, particularly in rural areas, and 57% of its beneficiaries are women, while 12% are senior citizens. 

  • The success of eSanjeevani is also a testament to the power of digital technology in transforming healthcare delivery by overcoming the challenges of geography, accessibility, cost, and distance to provide equitable and quality care to populations across India.
